Kristen H. Walter, Ph.D. is the Division Head of the Clinical Research Program and a Clinical Research Psychologist at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, California. She is also a privileged clinical provider at Naval Medical Center San Diego, an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Division of Health Promotion and Behavioral Science at San Diego State University, and a without compensation employee at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. Her research focuses on the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and conditions that commonly co-occur with PTSD, such as major depressive disorder, traumatic brain injuries, and suicidality among active duty service members and veterans. Her work explores outcomes of evidence-based treatments for PTSD and comorbid conditions, as well as physical activity-based approaches. Dr. Walter is a Principal Investigator on numerous Department of Defense-funded trials. Her work has been featured in various media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and NPR.
Dr. Walter earned a BA in Psychology and Sociology from Case Western Reserve University; she received her MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Kent State University. She completed her Clinical Psychology Internship at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center in the Trauma Specialty Track. Her work has consistently incorporated both research and clinical care provision, which work in tandem to inform the development and testing of interventions that are optimally suited to address PTSD and co-occurring conditions among active duty service members and veterans.
